PROJECT
"GREEN TOAD, HERMANNíS TORTOISE AND EASTERN EUROPEAN HEDGEHOG Ė COMMON BUT STILL THREATENED HABITANTS OF OUR GARDENS"
PROJECT SUMMARY
Green toad, Hermannís tortoise and Eastern European hedgehog are classified into the group of specially protected animal species according to Protocol for the protection of amphibians (NN 80/99), Protocol for the protection of certain species of reptilians (NN 47/95) and Protocol for the protection of certain species of mammals (NN 31/95). Green toad (Bufo viridis) is useful habitant of the gardens because heís feeding on different invertebrates that are pests on many gardening plants. Hermannís tortoises are usually placed in our gardens where they accustom easily. Eastern European hedgehog is our only insectivore that hibernates. Heís very useful as he feeds on insects, particularly coleopterans, snails, mice and snakes.

These well-known animals were ordinary habitants of all green areas of the City till recently. However, their abundance is decreasing and they become scarce and threatened. Reasons are; green areas slightly disappear due to increased urbanization and enhanced utilization of fertilizers and chemicals toward pests and parasites pollute soil and water. Additionally, many animals get hurt because of intense traffic. Those processes have an effect on reducing their natural habitat and decreasing densities of their populations. Endangering above-mentioned animals brings irrecoverable damage to our regional fauna and itís advisable to respect their protection. Therefore, itís necessary to react actively to any attempt of endangering these animals.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT
We want to motivate local population to protect the endangered species of our gardens and allow them to survive by providing essential information on their biology. We tend to photo document as many interesting material and prepare one informative booklet, while detailed data will be presented on our web page in order to promote protection of valuable animals living in our gardens.

PURPOSE AND APPLIANCE OF THE PROJECT
Main purpose of this project is to foster the conciseness about protecting this ordinary, but still endangered species in our gardens. We would like to encourage conservation of animal and plant life in Dubrovnik region by plotting appropriate info booklet, presenting information relating biology and ecology of mentioned species and suggesting their protection. We intend to involve citizens of Dubrovnik, especially scholars, in activities concerning this project. Eventually, entire collected material, like photos and information on web page, could be applied to promote tourism.

PRESENT INFORMATIONS
Green toad, Hermannís tortoise and Eastern European hedgehog were common and ordinary habitants of our gardens till recently, but their abundance is decreasing and they become scarce and threatened. Green areas are reducing detriment urbanization, enhanced utilization of fertilizers and chemicals are used in gardens, traffic becomes more intensive and that all affect in reduced number of mentioned animals. Protecting these animals is particularly important in maintaining biological diversity of Dubrovnik region.
